Another fun evening of ice fishing in the Minneapolis area!!
I caught this crappie on a lake to the north east of Minneapolis. They started biting on crappie minnows at about 7:00 pm. The ice thickness on the lake I was on was approximately 18″ thick. Sorry I can’t just come out and tell you what lake it is, but I will tell you the lake is producing some very tasty fish dinners! ;P
Ice Thickness Update
I was out fishing on Bone Lake in northern Washington County today and found ice in the range from 5″ to 9″ inches thick. While I was out fishing today I ran into a couple people who had fished Chisago Lake and they told me most of the ice on the lake was between 7″ to 9″ inches thick.
I hope to make it out onto a couple lakes in the city tomorrow morning I will post in the early afternoon what I cam up with. By the way all I caught out on Bone Lake today was Perch off waxies and small jigs, I had tip-ups set up with sucker minnows for the Northern Pike but didn’t see any.
When is the ice safe to go on?
When is the ice safe to go on?
There is never a certain date or time when the ice is guaranteed safe to go on. It varies on every lake and river. Always check the ice thickness before venturing to far out on the ice. I think in the Minneapolis metro area most of the smaller lakes and ponds can have anywhere from 4″ to 7″ of ice, but I have also found that some lakes have much less ice, always proceed with caution. The ice thickness as of Sunday 12-5-10 on Silver lake in North Saint Paul off of 120 and 18th there was a consistent 6″. On Tuesday 12-7-10 I was out on a lake in northern Washington county and I found that there was a consistent 7+”. I would avoid the bigger lakes for now and definitely stay away from the rivers. The fresh ice has the fish biting like crazy though, so if the ice is strong and safe enough the getting is good out there.
Remember, always check for ice thickness and travel light early in the season if you are going to be going out on the frozen water. I will post a couple other ice thicknesses during the weak as I plan to go out ice fishing a few more times this week.
Take care and remember, catching a few crappies isn’t worth going through the ice, it is much better to wait a couple more weeks, if you are uncertain how safe the ice is, stay on shore.
